Dining

Mexican cuisine is one of my favorites, and both destinations have a smorgasbord of dishes to satisfy any food lover’s cravings. Even if you choose to stay in an all-inclusive resort where meals are included, I strongly suggest leaving the hotel at least once to try authentic Mexican food. 

Food in Puerto Vallarta can be very traditional, with many restaurants serving tacos, enchiladas, tamales, and mole. Seafood is also prominent (this is a coastal city, so expect to find lots of shrimp, fish, and octopus on the menu)! 

In town and around the Romantic Zone, you’ll also find a lot of street food stalls, which are great for local flavors and cheap eats! For a more upscale dining experience, you can also choose one of the beachfront restaurants on the Malecon for a delicious meal with a view.

Situated on the Yucatan Peninsula, Riviera Maya is one of the best places to indulge in Yucatecan cuisine. From cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork) to salbutes (fried tortillas with toppings), there are tons of amazing dishes that you can try during your visit. And because you’re on by the water, seafood is also incredibly fresh and tasty!

Restaurants and bars here tend to cater more towards tourists, which means there are quite a few fine dining establishments and international eateries. However, you can still find good Mexican restaurants and street food stalls if you’re craving something more local.

Nightlife 

The nightlife in Puerto Vallarta vs. Riviera Maya offers two very different experiences to vacationgoers. 

I would say that PV is a bit better due to the diverse selection of cocktail bars, live music venues, and nightclubs. Most of the action is centered around the Malecon, which is bustling from early evening all the way into the wee hours of the morning (some stay open until 5 or 6 am!).

But you don’t have to be a clubber or partygoer to enjoy the nightlife scene here. You’ll also have your pick from the many rooftop bars or beach bars if you want to enjoy a nice cocktail while watching Puerto Vallarta’s world-famous sunset. 

Nightlife in Riveria Maya tends to take place at the resorts. Many all-inclusives have nightly shows, live music, and a variety of bars where you can enjoy a laid-back or wild evening.

The only exception would be Playa del Carmen. This town has a lively street filled with bars, restaurants, and clubs (Fifth Avenue), which is a nice alternative for those who want to take part in the nightlife outside of the resorts.

Travel Costs

Budget is a big concern for many travelers. Between the cost of international flights, nights in a hotel, meals, and excursions, things can quickly get expensive!

If you’re trying to save money, your dollar will stretch much further in Puerto Vallarta. The town is much cheaper compared to Riveria Maya, which is generally more expensive in terms of accommodation, food, and activities.
