Puerto Vallarta or Riviera Maya?

As two of Mexico’s most popular vacation hot spots, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Maya have something special to offer every type of traveler. But deciding which area to go can be tricky, as they are quite different from each other in terms of landscape, cost, and accommodation options.

From the ample snorkeling and diving opportunities on the Caribbean coastline to the vibrant cultural experiences available on the Pacific, knowing which side of Mexico is better can help make planning your vacation much easier.

That said, there are plenty of other factors to consider when deciding between Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Maya. I’ll share the main similarities and differences of each area to help you decide where to go on vacation.

Location and Weather

Situated on contrasting coasts, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Maya each present vacationers with unique experiences. Puerto Vallarta, nestled on the Pacific Coast, is celebrated for its breathtaking combination of lush mountains, golden beaches, and clear blue waters, offering a rich blend of natural beauty and cultural exploration in its city center and historic old town.

The climate in Puerto Vallarta remains pleasantly warm year-round, with temperatures averaging in the low 80s during winter months and climbing to the high 80s or 90s in summer. However, the region experiences its rainy season from June to October, with peak rainfall in July and August, which visitors should consider when planning their trip.

In contrast, Riviera Maya, located on the Yucatan Peninsula near the Caribbean Sea, boasts quintessential Caribbean landscapes with pristine white sand beaches and stunning turquoise waters. Its tropical, humid climate consistently stays in the 80s and 90s, making it an idyllic beach getaway. The area stretches south from Cancun, encompassing serene resort towns like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Puerto Morelos, devoid of major urban centers and offering a more relaxed vacation vibe.

On the other hand, the beaches of Puerto Vallarta present a different kind of beauty. Situated along the Pacific coast of Mexico and backed by the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains, the scenery here is breathtaking, with spectacular sunsets adding to the allure. However, the Pacific waters can be colder and rougher, especially during the winter months, potentially making swimming and water sports more challenging. Despite this, the vibrant city life and rich cultural offerings of Puerto Vallarta continue to captivate visitors.

Dining

Mexican cuisine is one of my favorites, and both destinations have a smorgasbord of dishes to satisfy any food lover’s cravings. Even if you choose to stay in an all-inclusive resort where meals are included, I strongly suggest leaving the hotel at least once to try authentic Mexican food. 

Food in Puerto Vallarta can be very traditional, with many restaurants serving tacos, enchiladas, tamales, and mole. Seafood is also prominent (this is a coastal city, so expect to find lots of shrimp, fish, and octopus on the menu)! 

In town and around the Romantic Zone, you’ll also find a lot of street food stalls, which are great for local flavors and cheap eats! For a more upscale dining experience, you can also choose one of the beachfront restaurants on the Malecon for a delicious meal with a view.

Situated on the Yucatan Peninsula, Riviera Maya is one of the best places to indulge in Yucatecan cuisine. From cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork) to salbutes (fried tortillas with toppings), there are tons of amazing dishes that you can try during your visit. And because you’re on by the water, seafood is also incredibly fresh and tasty!

Restaurants and bars here tend to cater more towards tourists, which means there are quite a few fine dining establishments and international eateries. However, you can still find good Mexican restaurants and street food stalls if you’re craving something more local.

Nightlife 

The nightlife in Puerto Vallarta vs. Riviera Maya offers two very different experiences to vacationgoers. 

I would say that PV is a bit better due to the diverse selection of cocktail bars, live music venues, and nightclubs. Most of the action is centered around the Malecon, which is bustling from early evening all the way into the wee hours of the morning (some stay open until 5 or 6 am!).

But you don’t have to be a clubber or partygoer to enjoy the nightlife scene here. You’ll also have your pick from the many rooftop bars or beach bars if you want to enjoy a nice cocktail while watching Puerto Vallarta’s world-famous sunset. 

Nightlife in Riveria Maya tends to take place at the resorts. Many all-inclusives have nightly shows, live music, and a variety of bars where you can enjoy a laid-back or wild evening.

The only exception would be Playa del Carmen. This town has a lively street filled with bars, restaurants, and clubs (Fifth Avenue), which is a nice alternative for those who want to take part in the nightlife outside of the resorts.

Travel Costs

Budget is a big concern for many travelers. Between the cost of international flights, nights in a hotel, meals, and excursions, things can quickly get expensive!

If you’re trying to save money, your dollar will stretch much further in Puerto Vallarta. The town is much cheaper compared to Riveria Maya, which is generally more expensive in terms of accommodation, food, and activities.

All in all, you can’t go wrong with Puerto Vallarta or Riveria Maya. With beautiful landscapes, delicious food, and warm, sunny weather, either destination will make a great setting for your relaxing or adventurous vacation!
